8X Inc to Develop Camcorder Chips with Acutelogic
December 08, 2005
On December 1 the Taiwanese IC design house X8 Inc announced that they will join hands with Japanese Acutelogic to develop back-end ICs supporting 8MP CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) and CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor), becoming the first Taiwanese chipmaker in the digital camcorder chip market, which has been dominated by US and Japanese makers. Scheduled for release in early 2006, the chips will be used initially in digital camcorders, digital cameras, and handheld multimedia players, mainly for the Taiwanese, Japanese, European, and US markets. This deal is aimed to combine Acutelogic's digital image processing technology with 8X Inc's design capabilities and cost advantage. In addition, 8X Inc has been in talks with CMOS sensor vendors on forming an alliance, in expectation of helping them boost their digital camcorder market share in the next year.
